RAIL STRIKES, EPIC VIEWS, NEARLY FALLING OUT OF TRAINS AND RAINY DAYS IN KANDY

THE ELLA TO KANDY TRAIN JOURNEY

Ella to Kandy

After a few days in Ella, we were heading up to Kandy and I’d heard great things about the train journey, so that’s how we decided to get there.

We ended up having to have one more night in Ella though, as there was a rail strike and we decided to hold off for a day and see if it would be resolved the next day.

Fortunately it was.

The train journey is definitely worth taking. We got first class tickets, which was essentially no different from standard class in the UK. No free paper and no cup of tea with this first class!

The views were incredible. The train weaved through the Sri Lankan hills, through tunnels, over bridges and through gorgeous countryside.

I was hanging out the side of the train for a lot of the journey, trying to capture the beauty of the ride. It was a bit risky, as there’s nothing to prevent you falling out and down one of the sheer drops, but it was worth the risk.

Here’s a few snaps from the journey.

Half way through the journey, the fog descended and the heavens opened, which added to the atmosphere of the ride, but hampered the views of the countryside.

The overall journey was around 7 hours. It’s a fantastic way to see the Sri Lankan countryside and a journey that you really should take if you’re in the country.

Here’s a quick video of some of the journey. The footage was not really very usable, due to camera shake, but check it out anyway!

RAINY DAYS IN KANDY

Kandy

We arrived in Kandy and it was still raining. We grabbed a tuk-tuk and made our way to our hotel where we’d booked in for 2 nights.

It was a great hotel, up in the hills, with views over the town, but a couple of miles from the main sights.

While we were here it rained pretty solidly for the 2 days, so it was a bit of a washout to be honest.

There’s not really much to report and I wish we could have visited the town in better weather as it seems like there is quite a lot to see.

Here’s a couple of snaps from our time here though.

ONTO TRINCO

After a fairly drab visit to Kandy we were heading up to another beach town. Trincomalee!
